Manufacturing process Hybrid fabrication with metal 3D printers, Simultaneous 5-axis machining
Features Above is an example of a cup mold which supports a cooling fluid tube in spiral-shape.
Metal 3D printers are effective to improve coolability of a mold.
It provides flexibility in shaping of flow channels which cannot be achieved by machining.
It is also possible to make only a part of the mold with metal 3D printers.
It is called "hybrid fabrication". Large blocks are processed by cutting, and the detailed work for cooling fluid channel is done by 3D printers.
For the mold with cooling fluid tube in this example,
the leading time was recuded by 30% with hybrid fabrication,
comparing to the case using metal 3D printer only.
